As a recording studio and music creation house we love listening, playing and generally being surrounded by music. With our new office space for the first time in years we are able to record live bands in our recording studio and produce fresh new music creation. Our Managing Director started his career as a musician and chose our company name ‘NoStairway’ as a pun to all budding musicians who learnt Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and then bored all Guitar shop sellers by playing it constantly.

This got us thinking, what are the top 5 guitar solos of all time!

Number 5: Michael Jackson Beat It

The reason why the guitar solo in Michael Jackson’s ’Beat It’ is so great is due to the unexpected sampling of rock legend, Eddie Van Halen. It is rumoured that Eddie only heard ‘Beat It’ once before recording his guitar solo and after only two takes, Quincy Jones said ‘that’s a wrap’.

Number 4: Santana She’s Not There

Santana is famous for his guitar solos and would be foolish to not include him in our top 5 solos of all time. The smooth jazz fusion of this track intermixed with lyrics of love loss and a melodic, blues based guitar solo works to perfection, making even the shyest person on the dance floor want to air guitar.

Number 3: Guns.N.Roses Sweet Child O’mine

There is no one who after hearing the first five seconds of Slash’s guitar solo doesn’t recognise this song. Slash has received critical acclaim as a guitarist with Rolling Stone placing him at No. 65 on their list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” in 2011 and Total Guitar placing his riff in “Sweet Child o’ Mine” at No. 1 on their list of “The 100 Greatest Riffs” in 2004.

Number 2: Lynyrd Skynrd Free Bird

According to music reviewer Lorry Fleming, Lynyrd Skynrd’s ‘Free Bird’ is the most-requested song in the history of rock music. The original live set of this song lasted fourteen minutes and has achieved the number 3 spot on Guitar World’s 100 Greatest Guitar Solos. This is the only song that Gary Rossington used a different guitar for, replacing his Les Paul with a Gibson SG. To help raise the action of the guitar when playing slide he stuck a nail like piece of metal under the string near the nut.

Number 1: Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child

Jimi Hendrix is believed to be the greatest guitarist in music history and one of the most influential musicians of his era, popularizing the previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback and the use of the wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock to deliver tonal exaggerations. Not only did Hendrix break ground with his guitar playing he was also one of the first music producers to experiment with stereophonic phasing.
